Hello everyone! Fancied a chicken cassarole when I finished work today. Chopped up parsnip/potatoes/baby carrots/onion/mushrooms/garlic (yummy). Okay, I'm not going to chop quick like chefs! Just slow! I had the saucepans ready, veg went into saucepans then filled up measuring jug with water to take to saucepans. When part boiled, took one pot to sink to drain in colander. After it went into ceramic pot........I remembered that I have RA !!! Where's my husband when I need him (work)! Managed to lift heavy full pot in oven for cooking with sauce. Things we do (clearly forgot that I had to lift off worktop to bend down) Ohh well, have to rest my hands now until the timmer goes off! Anyone done anything without any forward thinking?!! Jane Xxx

We haven't got a bath, had it took out several years ago, we did some alterations to our bungalow about 15 years ago, made an en suite shower room in our bedroom and another one off the hall, well there were three females at home then. So, once when I was visiting my daughter I decided to have a nice soak in her bath, there was only me and my son in law in at the time. She had a deep bath, I filled it up,put lots of bubble bath in it, climbed in and had a nice relaxing soak. Trouble was I couldn't get out. Arms and wrist were painful and I couldn't pull myself up. I decided to turn around and get on my knees, but everytime I tried to turn I just kept bobbing back on my back. Panic set in, had visions of my son in law having to get me out of the bath. I finally had the brain wave to pull the plug out and then after the water had gone I somehow managed to turn onto my knees and haul myself out.....phew....I wasn't going to do that again. Paula

Oh Paula you make me laugh! So frustrating not able to get out the bath Imagine if you had to call for help...... Its been a few years since I've bathed, I don't think I could bend down to sit in it anymore - showers are better!!!! At least you were not hurt! Jane Xxx

Oh Jane you are so right about it being easier to have a shower than a bath. I told my husband a few days ago that I wouldn't be able to climb in and out of a bath now. I know that alot of people have showers in their baths, but I don't think I would beable to lift my legs up enough at the moment to get in the bath, much easier just to walk into a shower.

Same here, we moved house a couple of yrs ago, down sizing into a small bungalow. There was a shower over the bath, couldn't get in or out of the bath to have a shower just too embarrassing!! First job on moving in was to get rid of the bath! My worst kitchen catastrophie, was spending ages preparing a large quiche, only to drop the whole thing as putting it into the oven. I just wanted to scream shout and cry in frustration, but as my 11 yr old grandson had just come round for a visit, with amazing control all I said was BLAST IT!! He was so good helping me to clean up all the mess, but ever since has teased me about that self control. When ever any mishap hapens now all I hear is " Blast it Nanny!!" in a very posh voice which never fails to bring a smile from everyone! Zena xx

ooh I know that one. I also have a well fed dog. In addition I have a halogen oven so I dont have to bend down. usually they come with a peculiar set of tongs that are used to lift the dish out of the oven. Its an absolute godsend nicer than using the microwave and quicker than a regular oven. I can heartily recommend buying one Fiona

Ditto what Fiona said. We've been using a halogen oven for over a year, it takes alot to impress me, but boy I am impressed, our oven is rarely used now. You can cook loads of things in it. It saves on the electric bill as well, at a glance you can see how things are cooking, no dirty ovens to clean (job I hate), normally a wipe around with a cloth does the job, but you can put water in it, switch it on and it cleans itself. We took one over to Gibraltar for our daughter Julie, she's not got air con and when her oven is on her apartment gets so hot, said she's saved alot on her electric bill she loves it and uses it everyday. Did cause a bit of laugh at security at airport. Husband took it in his hand luggage, he told the security man he'd got something electrical in his bag, they asked what, he said.....an oven....bet they've never had an oven in someones hand luggage before! LOL Paula. I keep going on about the halogen oven to people cos I really do think they're fab. Also they dont need so much fat to cook things. as well as being able to defrost things they speed up normal cooking times, and theyre just so much easier if you have dexterity problems. and as you say no scrubbing to remove baked on food as they clean themselves. Theres some really good cookbooks about for them too. I love banana cake when its done in the halogen!! Also read your post about the bath. I have the opposite problem as I have a shower over the bath. Usually I take a bath cos I can use my forearm to lift myself out but thought this once I'd take a shower. When it came to getting out, nothing to hold onto to step over and out the side of the bath. Knees not strong enough to bend and so sit on side of bath. I ended up turning round in circles in bath for about 5 minutes before I found courage to "fall" onto bath edge. will have to get one of those seats that fit over the bath. simple really but I didnt think I'd need it at the time.

Halogen oven sounds like a good idea!! Just spoke to hubby about it and he says it sounds a good idea We had our bath taken out this April and a walk in shower, both of us have mobility problems, and hadn't been able to get in the bath for more than two years. We had th shower over the bath, but so worried about slipping. I used to hold onto the shelving on one side and the sink on the other to get out!! I do miss a bath even now, but realistically it wasn't going to happen BARBARA

Hi Halogen Ovens,
Yes they are brilliant but please purchase the ones where the lid has a hinge that attaches to the bottom part as the weight of the lid (complete with motor) in those that are not attached places too much strain on the wrists and hands.
I too rarely use my big oven any more.
I use a small electric camping type kettle Phillips (ideal if you live alone or sufficient for two persons).
Hugs Sue

Jane Xxx Its that dreadful moment when you realise you have no idea how to get out of the damned bath. Recently (after a steroid pulse) thought I could manage but then found myself not able to pull myself out using the handles on the side of the bath. I have some special grippy points on the bottom of the bath so eventually managed to turn over into a kneeling position and thankfully knees held out and I managed to clamber out. Bath seat is now back in place. In the New Year I think I will have to investigate having a walk in shower installed instead. Sue

did something funny yesterday, decided to get my boots home facial remover out for my upper lip to use before I went to work. Left on for 5 minutes then removed white remover and hairs with plastic spatula.......keep forgetting it stings a bit later!!!! Spent the day applying aloe vera holland and barrett gel at work at the desk!! Splattered with clear gel in full view of colleagues!!!!!!!! Things we do! I'm out of the movember charity face growth contest they have every Movember to raise money for male cancer charities (hahahaha wasn't intentional hair growth) I've stopped going to salons to have wax removal because I can't clamber on the couch anymore. Love my bath - we have a Minivator bath lift which hauls me in and out. However, just having to manage with bed baths at the mo as I can't get upstairs due to a plaster cast on my right leg (from toe to groin) until they replace the removed infected TKR with another TKR!! As for facial hair - have you tried an epilator? Hurts like the devil at first but if you use it each day it's fine.

Oh dear. I have a shower room in my bungalow and want a bath put in with shower over. To be fair, my RA is well controlled and I really fancy having a gentle soak to ease my muscles/joints. Starting to think I should keep it as it is after all just in case! Never thought of the Halogen Oven thing, I live on my own so it could be quite economical for me. Only use my small (gas) oven as it is, or my beloved slow cooker of course. Be yourself - everyone else is taken. XX
